At the Cocoa City Council meeting on Wednesday, January 23, 2019, Cocoa City Council approved a measure to assist unpaid, furloughed federal employees who have been impacted by the recent government shut-down with their Cocoa Utility bill.  If a Cocoa Utility customer is a furloughed federal employee, who is currently affected by the recent government shut-down and is no more than two months past due on their bill, they may be eligible for extended payment terms.  Those customers may contact the City of Cocoa Utility Customer Service division to see if they are eligible for the assistance.

Customers must provide as supporting documentation one of the following:

  • Federal Identification (work badge/ID)
  • Most recent pay stub
  • Letter from employer on Company letterhead reflecting furlough status

The City of Cocoa will offer the following:

  • Late fee waiver (late fee will be adjusted after billing)
  • Exemption from service interruption as long as the account is no more than two (2) months past due.  The customer must contact Utility Customer Service prior to the due date of their bill to avoid service interruption.
  • An extended payment plan.  If the customer is unable to pay the balance on their account in full, the City has agreed to allow the customer to sign a six (6) month payment plan.
    • Payment plan arrangements must be requested by the customer and are not automatically applied.
    • The customer must come to City Hall with one of the above documents and sign the documentation of the payment plan, agreeing to the terms.
    • After discontinuation of the furlough, it is the customer's responsibility to pay the current charges on their account, in addition to the amount agreed to in the payment plan arrangement in order to avoid future service interruption.
  • Resources for other assistance such as Brevard County Community Action.

Cocoa's Utility Customer Service division can be reached at (321) 433-8400.
