Revamping the Porcher House Butterfly Garden has been a community volunteer effort indeed! Made possible by a Florida Friendly Matching Grant through Keep Brevard Beautiful, the
butterfly garden has been reimagined and restored in a collaborative effort among Historic Cocoa Village Main Street, the City of Cocoa and St. Mark's Episcopal Academy.
In early March, the Main Street organization was notified of the grant award. A couple short weeks later, our world as we knew it changed significantly and our work plans had to change as well. The pandemic and social distancing guidance presented challenges, but this resulted in special opportunities. Originally, the majority of the work of preparing the site and planting the plants was planned to occur in a day or two with a moderate-sized volunteer crew.
Because of the COVID-related limitations of the size of the group that could be in this fairly small space, we shifted to multiple, shorter work efforts with small crews that stretched across several weeks and brought out many different community volunteers. Thanks to the support of the City's Public Works Grounds crew and the many volunteers, the Butterfly Garden is now complete. Butterflies are finding their way and we are watching it grow! We look forward to seeing the volunteer effort grow as we continue to cultivate and maintain this new bright spot in our Village.
