In October 2019, Cocoa City Council approved a new Stormwater Assessment and Stormwater Capital Plan for the City of Cocoa’s Stormwater System. Projects included in the approved plan are already well underway. In December, the Stormwater Division installed floating wetlands at the Pineda Street Stormwater Pond, near the intersection of Duke Way and Pineda Street. The contractor installing these floating wetlands is Beemats, and they have completed similar projects around the County. These harvestable floating wetlands will help to remove nutrients from the stormwater pond and help to prevent the migration of these nutrients into the Indian River Lagoon. All of the plants and materials used for this project are either reusable or recyclable.
The City of Cocoa also recently purchased an additional street sweeper. The street sweeper helps clear trash and debris from entering the storm drains and then eventually making way to the Indian River Lagoon.
