(Cocoa, FL)—Christopher Zuniga, 31, is the newest member of the Cocoa Police Department. Zuniga accepted the Police Officer’s Oath in a special ceremony on Monday afternoon. He was with his family, including his 5-year-old son who pinned the badge on his daddy’s uniform.
Officer Zuniga was born and raised in Vero Beach. He spent several years working as a firefighter/EMT in Indian River Shores before deciding a career in law enforcement was calling him. In 2014, Zuniga graduated from the police academy at Indian River State College. Officer Zuniga will spend the next few months in training, learning the agency’s policies and procedures. He will spend several weeks with a field training officer before being deployed to solo patrol duties in about three months. He is the first new officer to join the ranks in 2018 and brings the number of sworn personnel to 68. The department continues to recruit new candidates to fill anticipated vacancies due mainly to retirements, promotions and normal attrition.
