This past quarter Council chose to recognize two Cocoa residents with a Key to the City for their outstanding work and contributions to our community.
On February 20, 2021, Jamel Dean was honored with a Key to the City presentation at Riverfront Park. Jamel is a graduate of Cocoa High School and former Cocoa High Tiger football star. He is currently playing football for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers who just won Super Bowl LV this past February. Jamel is the first former Cocoa High graduate to win a Super Bowl Title.
A few hundred family, friends and fans joined the celebration. Members of Dean’s family spoke about his hard work and persistence as well as former football coaches and mentors. Not only was Dean a stellar athlete, every person who spoke talked about his stellar grades throughout high school and what a stand out student he was.
On March 9, 2021 Cocoa City Council honored the 2021 Brevard County Teacher of the Year, Karrie Hieber with a Key to the City at the Cocoa City Council Meeting. Friends and family were in attendance to see the presentation. Mrs. Hieber was honored for her dedication and commitment to her students at Cocoa High School. This dedication was the reason she was named the Brevard County 2021 Teacher of the Year.
Members of Karrie’s family spoke about her love for her students and the time and dedication she commits to making sure they succeed. Her dedication to teaching our young Cocoa residents and making them stellar students is why Karrie was recognized by the Cocoa City Council and Brevard Public Schools.
