Geographic Information Systems (GIS)
What is GIS?
Most people think of GIS as mapping, but it is much more. The value of GIS for Cocoa is in its ability to centralize all data about City assets and functions into one location. So, GIS is really a collection of information that can be shared, integrated, analyzed, and viewed geographically.

The City of Cocoa is currently using and improving its Enterprise GIS to store data related to the water utility system, land use, and right of ways for the purpose of improving efficiency, accuracy and productivity. In the near future all City functions will in some way be enhanced by its Enterprise GIS. As improvements and enhancements progress City employees will be able to, among other things:
  • Conduct City asset searches without requiring the valuable time of field personnel
  • Automate notification of citizen procedures for responses to natural disasters and other threats to public safety
  • Respond to public information requests with greater efficiency
  • Maintain in one location all information needed to meet the needs of regulators, developers and other interested parties
  • Monitor the depreciation of City assets for effective analysis of replacement options
