CPD PARTNERS WITH WOMEN’S CENTER FOR SEXUAL ASSAULT AWARENESS EVENT

(Cocoa, FL)—The Victim Services Division of the Cocoa Police Department has partnered with the Women’s Center to promote awareness and prevention of sexual violence in a Sexual Assault Awareness Month (SAAM) event to be held in Cocoa on April 29th. The SAAM event will be held at Cocoa’s Riverfront Park, 401 Riveredge Blvd. beginning at 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. The event will feature a walk/march to stand up against sexual assault. There will be resource providers, prevention and self-defense information, free lunch and presentations by local leaders including Brevard County Sheriff Wayne Ivey.

April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month, a movement that began in the late 1980s to draw attention to the problem of sexual violence and to promote prevention, counseling and recovery for victims of the crime. This year’s theme is “Engaging New Voices”. According to the National Sexual Violence Resource Center (NSVRC), “We can all use our voices to change the culture and prevent sexual violence.” Social change and prevention requires addressing the root causes and social norms that allow sexual violence to exist. During the month of April 2017 the focus will be to call on individuals and groups whose influence can play a critical role in changing the culture. These groups include community members, families, Greek life, parents, coaches, faith leaders and survivors of sexual violence.

For more information about the SAAM event please contact the Women’s Center, Melbourne at 321-242-3110 ext. 2106 or email jares@womenscenter.net.
