MOTOR OFFICER INJURED

(Cocoa, FL)--A motor officer is recovering in the hospital after a Sunday morning crash during a police escort. Officer Rickford Leitch was one of more than a dozen police motor officers from multiple jurisdictions throughout Brevard County working to escort the "Moving Wall" through Brevard County to its stop at Wickham Park. As the procession moved south on US 1 approaching Rosa L. Jones the driver of a dark blue Jeep Cherokee, also southbound on the highway, attempted to turn east on to Rosa L. Jones and pulled directly in front of Motor Officer Leitch, who was traveling full speed to secure the next traffic control point in the procession. Officer Leitch struck the driver side of the vehicle which caused him to be thrown from the motor, flipping several times before landing. He was transported to the hospital where he is currently being evaluated. His injuries are not life threatening.

The driver if the Jeep Cherokee fled from officers who attempted to stop him. He is described as a black male in his late 20's or early 30's, possible mustache and goatee, short hair, possibly short dreds. The Jeep has heavy damage to the driver side door and is missing the driver side mirror. The Rockledge Police Department is investigating the crash due to our officer being involved.
