TWICE CONVICTED SEX OFFENDER BEGINS SERVING 45 YEAR PRISON SENTENCE

A twice convicted sex offender has begun serving what effectively is a life sentence for his crimes against children. Barry Gill Vest, (DOB 10/26/1961) was recently sentenced to 45 years prison for the lewd and lascivious molestation of two teenagers that occurred in April of 2014. The sentence also includes time for providing the victims with marijuana and more than 30 counts of possession child pornography. The sentences were combined to run concurrently which ends up amounting to 25 years.

In 1993 Vest served less than half of an 11 year prison sentence for similar crimes. “It’s sad that it took so many victims to get this guy locked up,” said Detective Debra Titkanich. “I’m satisfied that his current prison term will effectively keep him locked up for the rest of his life and he won’t be able to hurt any more children.”

In April 2014, Vest sought out two runaway juveniles aged 15 and 13. The boys had fled Crosswinds and were attempting to get to Palm Bay. Vest was listening to a police scanner when the report of the runaway juveniles came across the channels. He located the boys and told them he would help them hide from the police. Vest convinced the boys to go to his apartment where he gave them marijuana and began to engage in lewd behavior. When the boys realized Vest’s intentions they attempted to leave. Vest forced them to stay overnight and allowed them to leave the next morning. According to Florida Department of Corrections records, in 1993 Vest was convicted and sentenced to a combined 11 years prison for the sexual battery on a child under age 12 and for delivering marijuana to the victim. He served approximately 4 years of that sentence before being released in 1997. “Mr. Vest is the definition of a sexual predator,” Titkanich added.

Vest was not identified as a registered sex offender after his 1993 conviction because the sex offender registry did not become law until years later. He is now identified as a “Dangerous Sex Offender” in the state database. Vest is being held at the Lake Correctional Institution in Clermont. Florida Department of Corrections shows a tentative release date of April, 2039 at which time Vest will be 80 years old.
