Yvonne Martinez joined the Cocoa Police Department in September 2015 after serving as the public information officer for the City of Palm Bay, Florida for more than 10 years. Martinez is a former broadcast journalist with more than twenty years experience, much of which was gained in the Orlando area, a top 20 media market. She was assigned to cover Brevard County and spent much of her time reporting on the activities of law enforcement. After working for the local ABC and CBS affiliates she was recruited by then Brevard County Sheriff Phil Williams in 2003 to serve as the public information officer for the Brevard County Sheriff's Office. During her tenure as a PIO Martinez earned awards for her broadcasting experience including a 2007 Telly Award for her production of Palm Bay PD Off the Cuff, a 30 minute program focused on the stories of police activity within the Palm Bay Police Department where she worked from 2005 until 2015.
Martinez is the only Central Florida PIO to have completed the Master Public Information Officer course through FEMA. She is considered a subject matter expert and has been called upon by other municipalities and law enforcement agencies to train employees in media relations and crisis communications issues. Martinez is affiliated with the Florida Public Information Network, the National Information Officers Association and the Public Relations Society of America. She is a 1987 graduate of the University of Central Florida where she earned a bachelor's degree in radio-television communications with a minor in political science.
